Ethylene Carbonate (EC) and Lithium (Li) are major components in Li-ion battery electrolytes. An understanding of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) at a molecular level would be highly desirable to improve Li-ion batteries. The co-adsorption of both components, as a model system, is topic of the present work and will be investigated to mimic the situation at the SEI. In a first step, adsorption of the two materials on a Cu(111) surface was studied independently: (1) The adsorption behaviour of EC on Cu(111) was investigated by scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions. At sub-monolayer coverage, the STM images show highly ordered 2D EC islands around 100 K. Evidence for intact EC adsorbed on Cu(111) is provided by the XP C1s and O1s core level spectra. Temperature induced structural and chemical changes will be highlighted. (2) After deposition of Li atoms on Cu(111) held at 80 K, objects with a circular shape were identified. The adsorption behaviour and interaction mechanism is discussed. Co-deposition of both materials together on Cu(111) will be explored in forthcoming experiments.
