On-line coupling of TRIGA-SPEC to the research reactor TRIGA Mainz: Improvement of the Gas-Jet System — •Jessica Grund for the TRIGA-SPEC collaboration — Institut für Kernchemie, Johannes Gutenberg-Universität, 55128 Mainz, Germany

The Triga-Spec experiment – including the collinear laser spectroscopy setup Triga-Laser and the Penning-trap mass spectrometer Triga-Trap – is built to perform high-precision measurements on neutron-rich radionuclides and long-lived transuranium isotopes. The laser-spectroscopic measurements will provide model-independent information on nuclear ground-state and excited-state properties such as magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments as well as the change in the mean square charge radius. The direct mass measurements will serve to determine binding energies and Q-values. This data is of interest for nuclear structure studies and can test the predictive power of nuclear mass models.

The on-line coupling to the research reactor Triga Mainz offers the possibility to measure short lived nuclides produced by neutron-induced fission of 235U or 249Cf inside the reactor. These fission products are extracted by an aerosol-based Gas-Jet System and are guided through a skimmer system to an ionizer. The implementation of an aerodynamic lens shall improve the transmission through the skimmer by collimating the particle beam of the Gas-Jet System, thereby boosting the injection efficiency into the ionizer. The concept of this lens and first commissioning results are presented.
