When it comes to discussions about equal opportunities in physical research, the category of gender comes most prominently to the fore. This may be no wonder, because the physical sciences are among those science disciplines with the lowest percentage of women in research and higher education.

In the past two decades, the participation of women in STEM-fields has constantly increased, also in physics. But nevertheless, the "glass ceiling" still slows down the participation and the professional advancement of women across all disciplines and occupational areas. As we know from former research, academic careers in science are influenced by the working place cultures in research institutions. The ongoing research project genderDynamics aims at understanding the mechanisms, by which women are both in- and excluded from science.

In the paper, it will be discussed inasmuch gender and other categories of inequality may play a role for the success of academic careers.
