Hodographs in the Analysis of Resonant Magnetic Perturbations — •Philipp Drews, Peter Denner, and Yunfeng Liang — Forschungszentrum Jülich IEK 4 Institut für Plasmaphysik, Jülich, Deutschland

The measurement of the plasma response to resonant magnetic perturbations is of great interest for the mitigation of edge localized modes, which will be required on ITER in order to reduce the heat load and damage to plasma facing components. Hodographs represent a unique tool for visualizing the phase and the amplitude of time-varying resonant magnetic perturbations. Hodographs also allow an easy way of comparing experimental data with simulated fields. This comparison already shows that, for time-varying perturbations, the simple vacuum assumption is not enough even when there is no plasma; it is necessary to include other effects, such as eddy currents in the vessel wall, in order to reproduce the measured field. This hodograph method has been used to analyse data obtained from the TEXTOR experiment, with perturbations applied by the Dynamic Ergodic Divertor (DED) system.
