Water pollution with chemical compounds is a steadily growing problem. In particular pharmaceutical residues are raising concern.

Plasmas that are generated at atmospheric pressure can provide a promising solution for water decontamination. We have found that pulsed corona discharges that are generated in a coaxial geometry directly in water are able to degrade a wide range of pharmaceutical residues. Diclofenac, ibuprofen, ethinylestradiol, carbamazepine, diatrizoate, diazepam, and trimethoprim were degraded by 45 - 99 percent for treatment times between 15 - 66 minutes.

To identify reactive species that are primarily responsible for the degradation of these components and to distinguish between different reaction pathways, we used phenol as a chemical model system. This way we were able to identify the attack by hydroxyl radicals as the main reaction pathway in our system. Accordingly, we applied these findings to investigate and explain the degradation of the more complex pharmaceuticals diclofenac. Experiments were conducted with GC-MS in combination with the NIST database and solid phase extraction.
