To the self-forces on structured nonuniform orthogonal grids in Particle-in-cell Codes. — •Denis Eremin and Thomas Mussenbrock — Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Bochum, Deutschland

A popular approach for kinetic simulation of low-pressure technical plasma behavior is the particle-in-cell method. Bounded nature of technical plasmas leads to several different spatial scales which need to be resolved during a simulation. Additionally, it is often convenient to use non-Cartesian coordinates which conform to the problem's geometry. As a result, the logical coordinates used for discretization of the fields in the simulation have a non-uniform metric tensor. The downside of using such coordinates is the emergence of unphysical self-forces acting on the particles, which arises due to the inaccuracies between the extrapolation of a particle's charge to the grid and the consequent reciprocal interpolation of the resulting fields back to the particle's location. In this work we discuss how such self-forces can be avoided in case of orthogonal logical coordinates.
