Mass spectrometry and simulation of the effluent of the micro atmospheric pressure plasma jet with water admixture — •Gert Willems, Simon Hübner, Simon Große-Keul, Simon Schneider, Jan Benedikt, and Achim von Keudell — Ruhr-Universität Bochum

One of the future applications of low temperature plasma is medical treatment or sterilisation. Such application requires thorough understanding and control of species densities and reaction chemistry in the plasma afterglow region. In particular the hydroxyl density is of interest due to its high reactivity in liquid environments. The micro atmospheric pressure plasma jet, when operated with <1% water admixed into helium, can produce OH radicals in controllable fashion. Previous experiments, combined with a global or 0D model, show a possible regime change, from an electro positive to an electro negative plasma, with increasing admixed water concentration. Positive and negative water clusters generated by the micro jet are measured with an ion mass spectrometer as indicator for this regime change.
