Thomson Scattering in a nanosecond pulsed discharge — •Christian-Georg Schregel, Dirk Luggenhölscher, and Uwe Czarnetzki — Institute for Plasma and Atomic Physics, Ruhr-Universität Bochum

A nanosecond discharge is operated at atmospheric pressure in a strong He flow. Pulses of 150 ns, 1 kV - 2kV and 5 kHz repetition frequency are applied to two molybdenum electrodes with a gap of 0.9 mm. A distinct delay between the applied voltage and the onset of current is observed, which depends on voltage and pressure. This measured characteristics can be well explained by a simple analytival model based on the Townsend theory. Electron densities and temperatures are determined by Thomson scattering using a frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm. Further, the low energy part of the distribution function is obtained. Time resolved results are presented and compared with the model and electrical and emission measurements.
