Pressure Dependency and Structural Analysis of Plasma Crystals under Laboratory Conditions — •Christopher Dietz, Benjamin Steinmüller, and Markus Thoma — I. Physikalisches Institut, JLU Gießen

Crystallization of extended 3D plasma crystals has been investigated mostly under microgravity conditions, while exhaustive research under laboratory conditions is difficult.

We are able to generate large 3D plasma crystals under these conditions. To study the pressure dependence of the crystallization, a wide variety of structural analysis methods are applied. Especially bond-orientational-order parameters, although recently criticized, are commonly used. A lately proposed method (Minkowski structure metric) avoids many of the shortcomings of bond-orientational-order parameters and is comparable to previously used analyses.
