Lower ionospheric variability due to atmospheric changes — •Christoph Jacobi, Friederike Lilienthal, and Amelie Krug — Universität Leipzig, Institut für Meteorologie, Stephanstr. 3, 04103 Leipzig

Long-term changes of the upper atmosphere are owing to composition changes, i.e. the radiative influence of CO2 and ozone variability, and changes of atmospheric dynamics, which couple to the thermosphere/ionosphere (T/I) mainly through waves at different scales. These coupling processes lead, in addition to solar effects, to changes of the T/I system that should be taken into consideration for detection and forecast of T/I variability. At a decadal and interdecadal time scale, middle atmosphere temperature variability is determined by its CO2 and ozone content. This results in a cooling and consequently shrinking of the mesosphere. This can be registered in the lower ionosphere as a decrease of E region heights, low-frequency radio wave reflection heights, and also meteor heights, which can be registered by radar. An attempt to combine such registrations is presented, and it is shown that this cooling/decreasing trend is not linear, but changes in the 1990s due to the recovery of stratospheric ozone.
