Several optical diagnostic methods have been developed to enable earlier detection of skin cancer, while micrographic surgery is an established, but time-consuming operating procedure. Among several spectroscopic methods laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIF) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) have the potential to provide real time diagnosis of malignant and precancerous skin tissue.. In our previous experimental results, it was shown that LIF spectroscopy is a useful tool to differentiate healthy from malignant (e.g. basal cell carcinoma BCC, squamous cell carcinoma SCC) skin tissue. In this work, we combine LIF diagnostic technique with the high lateral and axial resolution of OCT for ex vivo detection. Comparison of the diagnostic ability of those optical methods, in excised tissue ex vivo, was made with the findings of frozen-section histology in micrographic surgery.
