A general search for new phenomena with the ATLAS detector in pp collisions at s = 8 TeV — •Fabio Cardillo for the ATLAS collaboration — Albert-Ludwigs Universität Freiburg

The Large Hadron Collider provides many opportunities to investigate physical phenomena at the TeV scale. In the last years limits have been set on many theories predicting the occurence of new physics in this energy range. Although these searches cover already a wide variety of possible event topologies, not all possible final states in the detector have been sufficiently explored yet. Events caused by unexpected interactions or new particles might still be hidden in LHC data.

The approach presented intents to address this important issue with a model-independent search strategy. Event topologies involving isolated leptons, photons, jets and jets identified as originating from b-quarks (b-jets) as well as missing transverse energy are investigated. The events are subdivided according to the number and type of physics objects into exclusive analysis channels. For each channel, a search algorithm is applied in order to reveal deviations between data and the simulated background in several kinematic variables sensitive to new physics effects. To quantify the probability for such a deviation to appear in any of the final states considered, the p-value distribution of the observed deviations is compared to an expected distribution obtained from pseudo-experiments.

The performance of the model-independent general search at the ATLAS experiment is introduced, including a summary of the results from Run I as well as the plans and prospects for Run II.
