Measurement of the Mass of the W Boson with the ATLAS detector using data collected in 2011 — •Christoph Zimmermann, Stefan Tapprogge, Matthias Schott, and Mikhail Karnevskiy — Institut für Physik, Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz

The mass of the W boson MW is one of the fundamental free parameters of the Standard Model.

With the discovery of a particle compatible with the Higgs boson by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations in 2012, the Standard Model is now an overconstrained system. This means, that improving the precision of MW can be seen as an indirect search for new physics by testing the consistency of the Standard Model.

Using the Large Hadron Collider, located at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) near Geneva, the ATLAS collaboration collected one of the largest samples of W decays in the world. This offers the possibility to decrease the uncertainty on MW even further with respect to the results obtained by the Tevatron collaborations.

This talk will present a measurement of MW performed with data obtained in 7 TeV proton-proton collisions. Basic methods, sources of uncertainty, as well as strategies to reduce these will be discussed, together with an outlook on first results and the current status of the analysis.
