Novel 4D simulations of cosmic ray propagation: Influence of cosmological effects* — •David Wittkowski and Karl-Heinz Kampert — Bergische Universität Wuppertal

Although ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) have been investigated for more than half a century, most of the main questions regarding UHECR are still unanswered: What is their origin? What is their chemical composition at the sources? How are they accelerated? A promising way to investigate these issues is 1.) to make assumptions on the origin, source composition, etc. of UHECR, 2.) to simulate their propagation to the Earth under these assumptions, and 3.) to compare the simulation results with experimental data on actual cosmic ray observables such as the energy spectrum, mass spectrum, and anisotropy in the arrival directions of UHECR arriving at the Earth. Using the Monte-Carlo Code CRPropa 3 we carried out the first 4D simulations of the propagation of UHECR taking into account deflections in cosmic magnetic fields as well as cosmological effects such as the redshift evolution of the photon background and the adiabatic expansion of the universe. In this talk we will present results of these simulations, which are much more realistic than previous 1D and 3D simulations, and discuss the effect of cosmological effects on cosmic ray observables. In addition, an astrophysical scenario that is in good agreement with current measurements of the UHECR observables will be presented.
