A promising approach towards online range verification in particle therapy is the analysis of the prompt gamma radiation, emitted by several nuclear processes.

Using a High Purity Germanium detector (HPGe) we investigate the prompt gamma radiation for different phantom materials and thicknesses at different proton beam energies. The HPGe detector is mounted on a rotation system in order to measure the angular distribution. Analysis is focused on inelastic scattering of protons on carbon, proton induced spallation of oxygen and inelastic scattering of protons on oxygen.

We observe significant variations of the gamma rate within one millimeter phantom thickness. Furthermore, the gamma rate changes by up to 50% at different observation angles. A critical decrease of the signal-to-noise ratio is observed at beam energies in the upper half of the energy range of clinical relevance (150-250 MeV/u).
