The GEMPIX is a Triple-GEM gas detector read out by a 55 µm pitch pixelated ASIC (the Timepix readout chip). It is operated as a highly compact (10 cm3) time projection chamber. Characterisation measurements with photons, alpha particles and relativistic protons will be presented. Future use of this detector as a microdosimeter and for measurements of the 3D energy deposition in a water phantom in proton and ion therapy is discussed.
