Emissions of sulphur dioxide (SO2) are highly problematic for climate, health and buildings. The amount of SO2 emitted each year, however, is currently increasing. One main origin of SO2 emissions is the transportation sector. Further, a significantly increasing source is the use of biomass for energy production. Dielectric barrier discharge plasmas are able to completely remove the SO2 from exhaust gas streams. This process becomes especially effective if the plasma discharges is directly combined with a cheap powder sorbent such as limestone. The combination of a quadrupole mass spectrometer and an electro-chemical sensor system was used to determine the influence of the treatment on the composition of the gas streams.
