Stability of Weyl semimetals under the formation of charge density waves — •Christoph Berke, Paolo Michetti, and Carsten Timm — Institute of Theoretical Physics, Technische Universität Dresden, 01062 Dresden, Germany

In Weyl semimetals, the valence and the conduction bands touch at point, called Weyl points, with a linear dispersion relation. Weyl points are topologically protected and thus stable against small perturbations, but may disappear if they annihilate with other Weyl points. We study an effective J=1/2-model for the pyrochlor lattice. Previous studies have predicted the appearance of a Weyl-semimetal phase together with antiferromagnetic all-in-all-out ordering. We are interested in the stability of the Weyl points under the formation of charge density waves that enlarge the unit cell. In the backfolded Brillouin zone, Weyl nodes that were far apart in the antiferromagnetic phase end up close together and could possibly annihilate and get gapped out if this reduces the free energy.
