Semiconducting organic polymers are a promising material for an array of electronic applications such as light-emitting diodes and organic solar cells. The most widely studied polymers in these regards are nowadays polythiophenes containing solubilizing side chains. Unsubstituted polythiophene, however, has only been sparsely investigated in recent efforts for organic photovoltaic devices, mainly due to its insolubility and intractability, which result in difficult processing. An approach to overcome the insolubility in the processing step is the in-situ oxidative polymerization from solution. The technique gives access to thin films which are stable and inert, and thus could prove beneficial in the search for cheap, easy-processable solar cells with a long lifetime. The objective of the presented project is to gain accurate control over the interface between donor and acceptor in solar cells by taking advantage of the insolubility of the polythiophene. Through variation of synthetic parameters such as solvent, additives or the use of template nanoparticles, the surface of the thin films can be precisely controlled from planar to complex, and kept intact in subsequent processing steps. Through systematic analysis of electronic and optical properties of the materials, a more general understanding of the structure – performance relationships is obtained.
