First-principles investigation of charge and spin currents in magnetic nanostructures — •Sascha Brinker — Peter Grünberg Institut & Institute for Advanced Simulation, Forschungszentrum Jülich & JARA, 52425 Jülich

Charge and spin currents are the basic mechanisms for many important phenomena in the field of spintronics. Their area of influence ranges from static properties like the orbital magnetic moment to dynamical phenomena like current-induced magnetization switching or spin pumping. To provide a deeper theoretical understanding of currents, I investigate the spatial distribution of charge and spin currents in magnetic nanostructures from first-principles. I outline my density functional theory implementation in the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) Green function method, in a real-space approach, which is applied to small magnetic nanostructures, e.g. iron adatoms or compact trimers deposited on the Pt(111) surface.

I focus on two important phenomena: First, the connection between ground state charge currents and orbital magnetic moments is discussed. Second, I present spin currents induced by dynamical external magnetic fields, which are deeply connected to magnetization dynamics via the continuity equation. This is the foundation for a universal first-principles theory of coupled magnetization and spin current dynamics, which naturally includes the spin current contributions to the g-shift and damping.
