We will present the electron spin resonance results of the double perovskite Ba2YIrO6. This material provides a playground to examine the magnetic interactions in a 5d transition metal oxide with strong spin-orbit coupling. Theory predicts that due to the strong spin-orbit coupling this 5d4 iridate should be in a nonmagnetic state. However, static magnetic and NMR measurements evidence the occurrence of paramagnetic spin centers that are correlated at low temperatures. To obtain deeper insight into the magnetic properties of Ba2YIrO6 ESR measurements of a polycrystalline sample were carried out for several temperatures and frequencies. This enables to quantify several different paramagnetic spin centers. Two of them correspond to S=1/2 with the g-factor g=1.99 and g=1.90, and the third one to S=3/2 with g=1.49. An overview of the possible origins for the different spin centers and their relevance to the unexpected magnetism of this compound will be given in this talk.
