Modeling the electrocaloric effect in ferroelectric solid solutions — •Anna Grünebohm1, Takeshi Nishimatsu2, and Ralf Meyer31Faculty of Physics and CENIDE, University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany — 2Institute for Materials Research, Tohoku University, Japan — 3Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Laurentian University, Sudbury, Canada

The electrocaloric effect (ECE) is the adiabatic temperature change of a material in a varying external electrical field. The ECE is promising for novel cooling devices [1]. However, in many ferroelectrics the large ECE is restricted to a narrow temperature interval. Solid solutions such as BaxSr1−xTiO3 are promising to tune the operation range. We discuss possible routes of modeling disordered solid solutions by means of ab initio based molecular dynamics simulations [2,3]. Furthermore, we present direct simulations of the ECE for BaxSr1−xTiO3 [4].
