We have recently demonstrated the synthesis of poly(p-phenylene) nanowires from dibromoterphenyl precursors on the reduced TiO2(110) surfacea. Here, we summarize our findings and present new data were we used X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to correlate the behavior of surface anchored hydroxyl groups with changes in the C 1s and Br 3d core levels as a function of annealing temperature. Thus, we obtained clear evidence for the proton-transfer mediated dehalogenation reaction as proposed by Kolmer et al.b In a second experiment we deposited trace amounts of different metals together with the molecular precursors and found highly uniform and ordered arrays of nanowires covering the entire surface. a JACS 138, 5685-5692 (2016) b Kolmer et al.
