NanoSQUIDs based on the cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) are promising devices for the investigation of single magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), as they offer high spin sensitivity down to a few Bohr magnetons/√Hz, combined with the possibility to operate them over a wide range of temperature (up to ∼ 80 K) and magnetic field (up to the Tesla range). Here, we present our efforts to optimize the performance and reliable operation of YBCO nanoSQUIDs, based on grain boundary Josephson junctions, in strong magnetic fields applied in the plane of the SQUID loop and perpendicular to the grain boundary plane. Special care has to be taken on the precise alignment of the external magnetic field. Moreover, we present first results on the characterization of the magnetic properties of Co MNPs, grown by focused electron beam induced depostion directly on top of the SQUID loops, demonstrating the feasibility of using YBCO nanoSQUIDs for single MNP measurements.
