First observation of Σ0 production in proton induced reactions on a nuclear target — •Tobias Kunz and Jürgen Friese for the HADES collaboration — Technische Universität München, Physik Department E62

We have studied the production of neutral Σ0 baryons in the nuclear reaction p + Nb at an incident proton energy Ekin = 3.5 GeV. The measurement has been performed with the HADES experiment setup at GSI, Darmstadt. Σ0 → Λ0 γ decays were identified via the charged decay Λ0p π coincident to e+e pairs from external gamma conversion. Experimental details, analysis procedures and background determination are presented. An observed total of about 250 candidate events is used to determine the Λ + Σ/Σ production ratio. The obtained numbers and spectra are compared to predictions from transport model calculations and are discussed in the context of thermal particle production in nuclear fireballs.
