Computational Imaging of Myocardial Perfusion — •Laura Schreiber — Deutsches Zentrum für Herzinsuffizienz, Universitätsklinikum Würzburg

Insufficient blood supply is one of the main causes of impaired cardiac function. Dynamic imaging during injection of a tracer bolus allows for a noninvasive quantification of myocardial perfusion. For many years it has been speculated that systematic errors may be introduced into these measurements in patients with impaired blood flow in the epicardial vessels, e.g. in coronary artery disease.

High resolution imaging in combination with high performance computing of the Navier-Stokes- and of the advection-diffusion-equation allows for an understanding of inhomogeneous tracer transport in the epicardial vessels. Based on this methodology, systematic errors of MRI-, CT-, or PET-based myocardial perfusion imaging can be understood.

In the future, important insights into the physiology and pathophysiology of myocardial blood flow will be available for the individual patient using a combination of high-resolution functional imaging combined with high-performance computing, i.e. computational imaging.
