Cellulose and cellulose derivatives are becoming technologically more interesting, not only because of of their versatility of chemical and physical modification which makes them suitable for various applications but also the sustainable nature of these resources attracts attention. Electrospinning, on the other hand, is a powerful technique to obtain polymeric mats consisting on nano or microfibers from a wide variety of polymers, including cellulose derivatives. In this study, electrospun cellulose acetate fibers were obtained and the mats were subsequently modified by applying an electron beam exposure of 20 kV. A modification of the irradiated area appears under UV excitation in form of a luminescent emission in the visible range. The structural changes after the e-beam irradiation were studied by means of Raman, infrared, fluorescence and uv-vis spectroscopy. The irradiated mat shows sensibility to environments with different polarity by undergoing quenching of the fluorescent emission. The different interaction with the solvents with different polarity gives a strong hint that fluorescence is generated in the fiber surface and that two-different species are involved in the quenching process. Fluorescence emission of electron irradiated cellulose acetate makes it suitable to act as a sensor material with extraordinary surface-to-volume ratio.
