Thermoelectric performance of multilayers of Sb2Te3 thin films and Pt nanoparticles — •Darius Pohl, Heiko Reith, Frank Schmidt, Gabi Schierning, Kornelius Nilesch, and Bernd Rellinghaus — IFW Dresden

Three material properties (Seebeck coefficient, electrical and thermal conductivity) define the efficiency of a thermoelectric material stated as figure of merit ZT. Introducing additional interfaces in the material is considered as an effective means to further improve the performance of thermoelectric devices. This is generally attributed to either a change of the local electronic density of states or to a significant increase of phonon scattering at interfaces and defects. In the present study, we investigate the thermoelectric properties of discontinuous thin film multilayers of alternating Sb2Te3 thin films and Pt nanoparticles. Both, the thin films and the Pt nanoparticle are prepared by RF and DC magnetron sputtering, respectively. The thermoelectric performance of the likewise prepared [(Sb2Te3)|PtnPs]N samples is correlated with the details of the local structure and chemical composition as provided by (HR)-TEM, EDXS and EELS investigations.
