High quality epitaxial bi-layered CoFe2O4BaTiO3 thin films were prepared on SrTiO3:Nb(100) and SrTiO3:Nb(111) substrates using pulsed laser deposition. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy showed that the films are polycrystalline single-phase perovskite, free of additional phases. Piezoforce response microscopy revealed that the film on SrTiO3:Nb(111) substrate shows strong lateral and vertical PFM responses. However, the film on SrTiO3:Nb(100) shows good response only in the lateral direction. The magnetoelectric properties were studied by applying an in-plane magnetic field and measuring the piezoresponse and a subsequent analysis via the principal components analysis (PCA). It was discovered that the thin films grown on SrTiO3:Nb(111) substrate show a better strain mediated coupling than those grown on SrTiO3:Nb(100) substrate. Thus it is concluded that the substrate orientation has a strong influence on the local piezoelectric and magnetoelectric properties of films.
