Donor-acceptor molecules have been investigated widely, because they offer suitable electronic characteristics for a possible use in electronic devices, such as single-molecule diodes or transistors. When deposited on a surface, the charge distribution within the molecule may change significantly due to screening and hybridization effects. Here, we investigate the N2-ethane-tetracyano-quino-dimethane molecule on a Au(111) surface, which exhibits a large dipole moment in gas phase. On the Au(111) substrate, the molecules form ordered self-assembled chains of varying width. Employing non-contact AFM at low temperature, we measure the local contact potential difference (LCPD). We show that the molecules still exhibit a distinct dipole character on the substrate. The dipole moment depends on the width of the molecular chains.
