CeRh2As2: a Ce-based Kondo-lattice system very close to a possible multipolar quantum critical point — •Seunghyun Khim1, Jacintha Banda1, Daniel Hafner1, Dongjin Jang1,2, Manuel Brando1, and Christoph Geibel11Max Planck Institut für Chemische Physik fester Stoffe, Dresden, Germany — 2Max Planck-POSTECH/KOREA Center for Complex Phase Materials, Pohang, Republic of Korea

We have recently grown single crystals of the new compound CeRh2As2 and studied its physical properties. Resistivity, specific heat (Cp) and magnetic susceptibility results evidence a strong Kondo interaction with TK ∼ 25 K. At zero field, two transitions occur at T1 ∼ 0.2 K and T2 ∼ 0.3 K. T1 and T2 much smaller than TK place this system very close to a hybridization induced quantum critical point (QCP). With magnetic fields T1 is gradually suppressed, suggesting its magnetic origin. T2, on the other hand, increases slowly with fields, similar to the quadrupolar order in CeB6. The suggestive quadrupolar order at T2 is compatible with high-T Cp data that imply an effective quasi-quartet ground state which provides a quadrupolar degree of freedom. Therefore our result indicate CeRh2As2 to be a unique Kondo-lattice system of strong potential relevance for the multipolar QCPs.
