The Role of Nuclear Power in the World — •Ludger Mohrbach — VGB PowerTech e.V., Essen

Over now only one human generation lifetime, the image, role and acceptance of nuclear power seem to have u-turned from saviour to satan. With global warming now posing an unprecedented threat to civilization, sustainable solutions are urgently requested and required. While obviously renewable energies are playing a strongly increasing role, in many parts of the world nuclear is part of a climate-relevant forward strategy with novel reactor types being under development from the present devices towards, inter alia, the so-called Generation IV aiming at enhanced safety and economical-operational qualities.

The presentation will outline major elements of the international situation of nuclear power and its development. As can be expected, key motivations for the implementation of nuclear power originate, in particular, from the different availability of national or regional energy resources and national political perspectives but also from considerations that intermittent renewable energy will remain, in the foreseeable future, dependent on backup systems at power levels close to the demand. It will become apparent that controversies of some 70 years of nuclear history still continue to be elements of today's discussion.

The presentation is planned to be held in german language.
