Time-periodic forcing is a powerful technique to explore new exciting phenomena in quantum many-body systems, e.g. artificial magnetism or topological phases of matter. For atoms in optical lattices it allows engineering of exotic band structures where coupling to higher Bloch bands can have severe effects even at moderate shaking amplitudes and off-resonant driving.

Here, we focus on band structure engineering for a BEC in a 1D optical lattice subject to monochromatic shaking near band inversion by varying the shaking strength across the point where the effective nearest neighbour tunneling parameter tNN has a zero-crossing. The point of band inversion, characterizing the transition in the occupation of states from zero quasi-momentum to the Brillouin zone edge, has been recorded systematically as a function of lattice depth and shaking frequency. Our measurements reveal a striking dependence upon these variables which can be explained by admixtures of higher Bloch bands.
