Improvements to the Kamiokanne experiment with the DRS4 Evaluation Board and FACT pre-amplifier — •Alina Nasr Esfahani and Dominik Elsässer — TU Dortmund, Lehrstuhl für Experimentelle Physik Vb, Otto-Hahn-Strasse 4a, 44227 Dortmund
The Kamiokanne experiment aims to be an inexpensive, easy to handle experiment to be carried out
in school. It is supposed to illustrate the existence and interactions of high energy particles.
It consists of a vacuum flask with photon detectors in the lid to detect Cherenkov radiation of
atmospheric muons traversing the medium inside the flask.
Previous versions of the experiment used photomultiplier tubes and NIM modules for the detection and
event selection. Silicon photomultipliers require less care in handling, which makes them more
appropriate in a school experiment than PMTs. To simplify the event selection a DRS4 Evaluation Board
is deployed as signal readout and to trigger on coincident events. The reduction of noise obscuring
low amplitude signals is crucial for a reliable performance. To improve the signal quality a modified
version of the pre-amplifier from the First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT) is used. High frequency
noise is surpressed very effectively and coincident events are recorded in practicable timescales.
Methods to test the hardware show significant improvements compared to the previous setup.
