Towards an Alternative Absorber Detector for the Garching Compton Camera Prototype — •Tim Binder1, Silvia Liprandi1, Thomas Ganka2, Florian Schneider2, Peter G. Thirolf1, Florian Wiest2, Reinhard Fojt2, and Katia Parodi11Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, München — 2KETEK GmbH, München

The Garching Compton camera (CC) prototype was designed for the 2D reconstruction of multi-MeV γ-rays, being promptly emitted by excited nuclei during irradiation of tissue with a particle beam and therefore predestined for online range verification in hadron therapy for cancer treatment. The currently used monolithic 50x50x30 mm3 LaBr3 crystal with multianode PMT readout shows an excellent spatial, timing and energy resolution [1]. However a setup consisting of a CeBr3 crystal with a Silicon Photomultiplier (SiPM) array readout promises comparable characteristics with improved signal-to-background ratio due to negligible internal radioactivity of the CeBr3 crystal as well as applicability in multi-modal imaging devices (e.g. CC and MRI) due to the insensitivity of SiPMs to magnetic fields. In this work the current status on the way towards an alternative absorber setup, consisting of a CeBr3 scintillator with Silicon Photomultiplier readout and ASIC-based electronics will be presented. This work is supported by the DFG Cluster of Excellence Munich Centre of Advanced Photonics (MAP), KETEK GmbH and the Bayerische Forschungsstiftung.
