As every application of X-rays involves the risk of radiation injuries, photon dosimetry with active personal dosemeters is an important field of research. A reliable performance of these dosemeters is indispensable and also legally required. Mandatory devices for occupationally exposed workers in Germany are based on a chemical process and acquire radiation doses over a designated period of time. Passive dosemeters (e.g. film badges) are being evaluated only once a month. To gain more immediate information about a potential harmful radiation exposure, the additional usage of active personal dosemeters is strongly recommended. However, there is currently no active personal dosemeter available that is capable of measuring the dose also in a wide range of pulsed radiation accurately. Due to the fact that pulsed radiation fields occur frequently in medical X-ray imaging protocols, this lack of dosemeters implicates a strong limitation in radiation safety. We investigate the use of photon counting pixel detectors for active personal dosimetry, especially to determine the accurate doses in pulsed photon radiation fields and at dose rates of more than 1 Sv/h, which is the minimum requirement. This contribution focuses on the principle of dose determination with pixel detectors and a dose determination method adapted to pixel detectors.
