Improving Photon/Hadron Separation in the Hybrid Data of the Pierre Auger Observatory Utilizing Information from SD Traces — •Philip Ruehl, Marcus Niechciol, and Markus Risse for the Pierre Auger collaboration — Universität Siegen, Department Physik

A key question in the field of astroparticle physics is the composition of cosmic rays at the highest energies (above 1017 eV). A discovery of photons in this energy range would play a major role in this task and would have an immense impact not only on astrophysics and particle physics, but also on fundamental physics. The Pierre Auger Observatory near Malargüe, Argentina, is the world’s largest detector for cosmic-ray-induced extensive air showers. Its two main components, namely the surface detector (SD) and the fluorescence detector (FD) provide complementary information in so-called hybrid events, i.e. air showers which are simultaneously measured by both detectors.

In this contribution we explore the possibilities of using the detailed time structure of the SD traces in hybrid events to improve the separation power between photon- and hadron-induced air showers.
