Rydberg atom and ion impurities in ultracold atomic gases — •Florian Meinert, Felix Engel, Thomas Dieterle, Robert Löw, and Tilman Pfau — 5. Physikalisches Institut and Center for Integrated Quantum Science and Technology, Universität Stuttgart, Stuttgart, Germany

Hybrid systems of ions immersed in ultracold atomic gases provide appealing means for studies comprising cold collisions, ultracold chemistry, or strongly interacting impurities. Here, we present our endeavor to embed a single ionic impurity into a Bose-Einstein condensate starting from a highly excited Rydberg atom. In a first set of experiments, we have prepared Rydberg orbits which exceed the extent of a trapped micron-sized condensate. This suppresses the typically dominant electron-neutral scattering and provides access to the interaction of the ionic core with the Bose-Einstein condensate observed at sub-microkelvin temperature.

In a second set of experiments, we have employed a tailored photo-ionization scheme for the production of a single low-energy ion. We observe Rydberg blockade induced by the polarization potential of the ion. The latter may allow us to investigate ionic transport through quantum degenerate matter in forthcoming experiments.
