Thermodynamics of the micromaser — •Maximilian Dirkmann und Andreas Buchleitner — Institute of Physics, University of Freiburg, Germany

The technological advancements of the past decades enable the control of systems down to microscopic scales. This has been attracting interest in the extension of the standard thermodynamic framework to quantum systems. In this poster, we develop a thermodynamical description of the micromaser, a fundamental quantum system consisting of a quantized electromagnetic field mode of a microwave cavity coupled to a thermal bath and undergoing subsequent interactions with a sequence of single two-level atoms. A central question is the definition of the entropy production rate, for which different expressions have been proposed in the literature. In case of the micromaser, we define the entropy production rate as the sum of changes in the von Neumann entropies of the field’s and the individual atoms’ reduced states, plus a term related to the exchange of energy with the heat bath. We compare our definition of the entropy production with the one given in [1] and study its behaviour for different operation modes of the maser, e.g. equidistant versus Poissonian arrival times of the atoms.
