Simulation of blazar flares through the ablation of a cloud by the relativistic jet — •Jonathan Heil and Michael Zacharias — tp4/ RUB, Bochum, Deutschland

The relativistic jets of blazars exhibit temporally variable flare activities. These flares last for different time scales -- from short events of a few days to months or even years. One possible explanation for the activity is a change in plasma density caused, for example, by an interstellar cloud entering the jet. Depending on the time scale of the jet-cloud interaction, the cloud is removed piece by piece and a flare is formed which reflects the cloud's density structure. As interstellar clouds vary in size and density, different lightcurves are expected from the interaction. In this presentation, we show how the flare may evolve for different cloud and jet parameters, and discuss which interstellar objects have the greatest potential to explain the various lightcurve shapes observed from blazar flares.
