30 Years of Precision Experiments with Cooled Beams of Exotic Heavy Ions at the ESR Storage Ring of GSI/FAIR. — •Bernhard Franzke — GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung GmbH, Darmstadt

The experimental storage ring ESR at GSI Darmstadt was approved in May 1985 together with the 18Tm synchrotron SIS18 and the nuclear fragment separator FRS. After a construction period of almost 5 years, an N10+ beam could be stored in the ESR on April 1, 1990. The presentation informs about the necessary instrumentation of the storage ring for precision experiments with highly charged primary ions from SIS18 (up to U92+) or with nuclear fragments from FRS. The original scientific objectives are compared with the most important experimental results after 30 years of ESR operation. Finally, an outlook is given on extended research potential by coupling the low energy CRYRING to the ESR.
