The electricity-, mobility- and heating-sector contribute to global GHG emissions with 40%, 24%, 11% respectively. Especially last two sectors require fast and deep de-fossilization efforts. Electricity will play for short-distance transportation an increasing role. However, long-distance carriage via trucks, ships and aviation will rest upon chemical energy sources for decades. Methanol, as liquid energy carrier and a basic chemical offers multiple applications. It is easy to produce via proven synthesis. Methanol becomes "green", if produced from renewable electricity via H2O-electrolysis and CO2 based synthesis, (e-methanol). The process is well understood, but not established on commercial scale yet. E-methanol shows large application-potential in blending of conventional gasoline, production of refinery additives, or in its further conversion to synthetic gasoline. Moreover, innovative catalysts and novel processes open opportunities to convert methanol to kerosene-, diesel- or other design fuels. 90% reduction of carbon footprint via e-methanol is achievable. Compared to bio-ethanol, lower carbon footprint and CO2 avoidance costs are expected. Another advantage of methanol use is its far-reaching compatibility with existing infrastructure and established conversion and propulsion technologies. For the realization of e-methanol projects a positive business case is required. The decisive points for the economic production of e-methanol is the price of electricity, CAPEX of electrolysis, CO2-costs and favorable regulatory framework.
