One of the fundamental questions in molecular reactions is to determine how the structure of molecules governs the reaction and thus leads to different reaction products. Studies of isomer resolved chemical reactions can shed light directly on the foundation of how form leads to function. We present the results of gas-phase reactions between acetylene cations C2H2+ with two different isomers of C3H4: propyne (HC3H3) and allene (H2C3H2). The highly controlled environment of an ion trap allows us to precisely measure the reaction products and branching ratios. The difference in observed reaction products from the two different isomers points directly to the role molecular structure plays in these reactions. Through the synergy of experimental results and quantum chemical potential energy surface calculations, we are able to explicate the different reaction mechanisms for the two isomers.
