Beam parameter stabilisation for the P2 Experiment at MESA — •Ruth Kempf — Institut für Kernphysik, Becher-Weg 45, 55128 Mainz

At the new energy recovering superconducting accelerator MESA at the Institute for Nuclear Physics in Mainz, the P2 Experiment aims to measure the electroweak mixing angle sin2Θw to a precision of 0.15 %. The asymmetry due to parity violation from the electron proton scattering with longitudinally polarized electrons on unpolarized protons will be measured. Because of the competitively low energy of 155 MeV the expected asymmetry will be around 30 ppb. Therefore a systematic uncertainty of 0.1 ppb at the end of the beam time of 10,000 hours with a beam current of 150 µA has to be achieved. For such high precision the beam parameters energy, current, angle, and position have to be extremely stable and controlled with an appropriate control system. The concept for controlling the beam’s angle and position is based on a digital system with an fpga. It is very fast and flexible in order to adapt to various environments and requirements. The high precision of the beam position measurement is going to be achieved with resonator cavities as beam position monitors. Tests of the control system at the Mainzer Mikrotron MAMI have shown that the requirements of the P2 Experiment can be met and the MESA beam will be sufficiently stabilized.
