From particle physics to black holes: The predictive power of asymptotic safety — •Aaron Held — Imperial College London

I will discuss how the phenomenology of particle physics and black holes is impacted by the predictive power of quantum scale symmetry and thereby constrains the asymptotic safety approach to quantum gravity.

Regarding particle physics, quantum scale symmetry could (i) UV-complete theories with perturbative Landau poles, (ii) explain the flatness of scalar potentials, and (iii) predict gauge and Yukawa couplings. My thesis has unveiled a mechanism that links the mass difference of top and bottom quark to their charge ratio, dynamically favours small Dirac neutrino masses, and realizes phenomenologically appealing transitions between different fixed points of the CKM-mixing matrix. The respective increase in predictive power extends to theories beyond the Standard Model, e.g., to grand unification.

Regarding black holes, quantum scale symmetry could resolve the singularities predicted by General Relativity. My thesis determines the shadow shape and characteristic image features of the resulting non-spinning and spinning regular black holes. Comparing to the shadow image obtained by the Event Horizon Telescope, regular black holes and even horizonless objects are not yet excluded.
