On the Gravitational Wave Spectrum of Compact Relativistic Objects — •Sebastian Völkel — University of Tübingen, Tübingen, Germany

More than one century ago, Albert Einstein proposed general relativity as the fundamental theory of gravity and gravitational waves are among its most fascinating predictions. Compact astrophysical objects, such as black holes and neutron stars, are the strongest sources and have recently been confirmed by the LIGO and Virgo observatories. The so-called quasi-normal mode spectrum describes the characteristic frequencies and damping times for small perturbations and can be used to study sources and to test general relativity.

In this thesis, a semi-analytic approach has been proposed to address the direct and inverse problem for numerically provided spectra of different types of compact objects, including exotic compact systems. It was shown that depending on the type of object, the effective perturbation potential, as well as parts of the space-time, and properties of the neutron star equation of state could be constrained. Because this type of analysis is novel and the general inverse problem for rotating objects is significantly more complex, it is limited to non-rotating objects. Other thesis projects focused on parameter estimation of exotic phenomenological waveforms, the application of the inverse problem to Hawking radiation, as well as possibly observable effects coming from black hole area quantization.
