Stability of a quantum skyrmion: projective measurements and Quantum Zeno effect — •Fabio Salvati, Andrey Bagrov, Tom Westerthout, and Mikhail I. Katsnelson — Institute for Molecules and Materials, Radboud University, Heijendaalseweg 135, 6525 AJ Nijmegen, The Netherlands

Magnetic skyrmions are vortex-like quasiparticles characterized by long lifetime and remarkable topological properties. These properties make them a promising candidate for the role of information carriers in magnetic information storage and processing devices. Though considerable progress has been made in studying skyrmions in classical systems, little is known about skyrmions in quantum systems: they cannot be directly observed by probing local magnetization of the system, and the notion of topological protection is elusive in the quantum realm. Here, we make an attempt to gain a deeper understanding of whether quantum skyrmions share the property of robustness with their classical counterparts, and how they can be detected. For that purpose, we theoretically analyze dynamics of quantum skyrmions subject to local projective measurements and demonstrate that observable properties of the skyrmionic quantum state change very little upon external perturbations. We further show that by performing repetitive measurements on a quantum skyrmion, it can be completely stabilized through an analog of the quantum Zeno effect.
