Room temperature severe plastic deformation of magnesium by accumulative fold-forging — •Farzad Khodabakhshi and Gerhard Wilde — Institute of Materials Physics, University of Münster, Münster, 48149, Germany

For the first time, accumulative fold-forging (AFF) was applied to the magnesium foils at room temperature to produce a layered ultra-fine-grained alloy undergoing the typical concept of severe plastic deformation (SPD). Also, by introducing the niobium nanoparticles between the foil layers and AFF-processing, a layered Mg/Nb nanocomposite material was manufactured. Then, the formation of ultra-fine and nano-grains upon AFF consolidation as well as the Nb nanoparticles dispersion, was characterized using advanced microscopy techniques. Improvements in the mechanical strength of the processed materials by intense grain refinement, along with their stability, were elaborated by tensile and indentation hardness testing. As the leading property for this newly developed material considering the role of interfaces, their hydrogen storage performance was examined to measure their capacitance behavior for possible battery applications.
