This talk describes the career path from a PhD work in basic research towards a technical manager position in the microelectronic industry. The variety of tasks and different options for the personal development in a big high-tech company are discussed. It will be shown what is needed in terms of technical expertise as well as personal behavior to become successful as a physicist in a challenging, competitive and international environment.
