When quantum physics meets art — •Caroline Gueye — French-Senegalese, artist-physicist
Spectroscopy plays a central role in quantum and high-energy physics, enabling the investigation of matter across scales – from atomic transitions to astrophysical plasmas. Here, we will focus on the spectroscopy used on Mars thanks to the ultra- sophisticated French-American instrument SuperCam, for the exploration of the Martian soil, which incorporates a whole new sense: “hearing”, with the collection of unprocessed sounds of the laser’s impact on the Martian soil. The art installation, carried out in collaboration with the Institute for Research in Astrophysics and Planetology IRAP, incorporates these sounds provided by NASA, with the support of Prof. Sylvestre Maurice, co-developer of the SuperCam instrument.
Einstein co-authored two landmark papers in 1935: EPR and ER. In 2013, Maldacena and Susskind formulate the conjecture ER = EPR, suggesting a deep connection between quantum entanglement and wormholes. The award-winning art installation “Quantum Tunneling” explores symbolically this theorical bridge between the microscopic and the cosmic scale, transcending the boundary between quantum phenomena such as – tunneling and entanglement – and space time geometry through a large-scale immersive work spanning over 130 m2. Grounded in concepts from quantum physics, it translates the phenomenon of tunneling into an experiential artistic form.
